Progress with solar energy around the world is extremely rapid. What will a solar future look like? What part will solar energy play in a truly sustainable world? Join Guy Dauncey, our keynote speaker, for a look at solar energy in our world today and in the future.

Presenter: Guy Dauncey is a recognized speaker, author, and organizer who works to develop a positive vision of a sustainable future, and to translate that vision into action. Guy is President of the BC Sustainable Energy Association, and author or co-author of nine books, including the award-winning The Climate Challenge: 101 Solutions to Global Warming. Guy writes a regular column for Corporate Knights magazine and is the publisher of EcoNews, a monthly newsletter that promotes the vision of a sustainable Vancouver Island.


The construction of an energy efficient home ensures that the heat stays in and the cold stays out. Join Geoff Murray, of Camosun’s Construction and Carpentry Department, for an overview of what makes a "Green Building" and how site planning, selection of building materials, and the indoor environment affects the efficiency of the home. An overview of building rating systems and current theory and practices of energy efficient construction is included.

Presenter: Geoff Murray teaches Carpentry Apprenticeship at Camosun College and is a Journeyman with over 20 years in the construction trade. Geoff is a LEED Accredited Professional and shares a holistic view of energy planning and energy conservation for your home.


The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System® provides a third-party certification program with benchmarks for the design, construction and operation of high performance healthy buildings. Join Phyllis Godfrey as she overviews key elements of residential LEED building: project planning; management and verification process; energy efficiency; renewable energy; water conservation; preferred products, materials and resources; waste reduction and management; and indoor environmental quality. Phyllis will feature examples of each element and case study a new build LEED home with a target Platinum level certification.

Presenter: Phyllis Godfrey is the principal of Phyllis Godfrey & Associates, a Victoria based consulting firm that supports sustainable design and building practices. Phyllis has been involved with green environmental construction initiatives since 2008 and is the project coordinator for a registered LEED Home project on track to achieve a Platinum rating from Canada Green Building Council.


The North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP) is the "gold standard" for PV and solar thermal installation certification. Designed to raise industry standards and promote consumer confidence, NABCEP offers certification for solar heating, PV, and small wind installers throughout North America.

Presenter: Ezra Auerbach is Executive Director of NABCEP, the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners.


Is geothermal a good option for heating my home? Geothermal heating and cooling can be installed in virtually any situation. Jason Rockson, of Mercury Refrigeration, will explain how geothermal systems work; the various design alternatives, how they can be adapted for your home, and what technical requirements there are for design and installation. Jason will help you explore options available while considering your family’s preferences, medical and comfort concerns regarding temperature, humidity, and the cleaning and purifying of air.

Presenter: Jason Rockson, owner of Mercury Refrigeration, shares his expertise in applying geothermal technology to the home. Jason is a Refrigeration journeyman with over 17 years in the trade, a Canadian Geoexchange Coalition Certified Installer, a Canadian Geoexchange Coalition Accredited System Designer, and a Vancouver Island instructor for TECA. Jason teaches geothermal design and installation for construction trades.


Now more than ever, technological advances and high fuel prices make solar energy an effective choice for water heating in Canada. Learn the basic principles of solar water heating for residential applications, what components are required, and what to look for in a quality system.

Presenters: James Smyth is a NABCEP certified solar thermal installer and owner of a local solar heating company with many years experience in solar heating for residential application. James and Darren teach the Solar Thermal Residential Installer course at Camosun College.


Get up to date on the latest residential solar electric technology, also called photovoltaic (PV), as Ed Knaggs provides a global perspective of the solar electrical industry in BC; how PV power works; how it can be used in the home; how to determine the right sizing for your home; and how to obtain and read product information.

Presenter: Ed Knaggs is Vice President of HES Home Energy Solutions and formerly Engineering Manager with Soltek Solar Energy. Ed’s career has focused on design and project management in the field of photovoltaic and he managed one of the largest Grid-tie installations in BC from design to installation. Ed’s experience includes curriculum design and teaching seminars in the installation, marketing, and design of photovoltaic systems. Ed holds a BSc in Electrical Engineering and is a member of several CSA technical committees supporting the solar energy industry.


People have been using wind power for a long, long time. Today huge wind farms are sprouting up everywhere and the electricity they produce is contributing to energy needs around the world. Wind power, though, does not have to be big. Small wind electric generators can be installed on a residential and cottage scale. Will Spaulding will describe how wind electric systems work, how much power they can generate, what you can expect if you install a small system or live near a large one.

Presenter: Will Spaulding is a professional mechanical engineer who has been teaching at Camosun for many years. He has experience in both wind power and solar energy as a designer, researcher, installer and maintainer. For several years Will managed the Solar Energy Research Lab at Queen’s University in Kingston Ontario as well as being the designer and installer of the first wind electric system in Ontario that fed electric power back into the grid. Will holds a master’s degree in solar thermal.


Dave Egles sums up our Solar Saturday by looking back on where we were and then on toward a sustainable future. He’ll explore how each of us can become more involved and support the growth of the renewable energy industry.

Presenter: David Egles is President and founder of Home Energy Solutions Ltd. (, a leading designer and distributor of solar electric systems with facilities in Victoria, BC. He also founded Soltek Solar Energy in 1988, which grew to become Canada’s largest distributor of PV products, until it became part of Carmanah Technologies in 2005 where he served on the board of directors. He is the past President and a current director for the Canadian Solar Industries Association (CanSIA) and was also on BC’s 100,000 Solar Rooftop Task Force in 2007 and 2008. Mr. Egles has a BSc in Physics from the University of Victoria, and an MSc in Physical Oceanography from the University of British Columbia and has over 20 published papers in the solar energy field.
